Lazar’s eyes narrowed and his back became ramrod straight. He knew what I had done. Our escape would be problem-free and so I smiled.

“I think you’ve wasted enough of my time. Thank you for giving me back my brother, I’ll be sure to teach him all I know.” And with that, we were gone in an instant, but I knew that just that quick, he’d be back and soon.

Adrian looked as bewildered as I did when all this paranormal stuff started happening. I took his hand and led him inside our home along with Kane, who was still draped over my shoulder. I felt like Amazon woman and vowed to not tell Kane how I got him back. His pride would have been a bit shattered by the image.

“Adrian, can you get me a cool cloth from the kitchen? It’s just down the hall there and the dishcloth is on the counter … thank you.”

He didn’t say a word but did as told as I took care of Kane. I didn’t want him to see what I was going to do, for he’d been through enough as it was. It would seem I had timed it perfectly, for when I was done giving my blood to Kane, Adrian walked in with the cloth.

“Thank you, Adrian, we need to take care of Kane right now.” Wiping his forehead off, I noticed his breathing had become more regular, and finally, my blood was doing its job in his system.

I watched Adrian as I tended to Kane. He looked so sad, so unloved, that it tore at my heartstrings to see him in such pain. Then, without any thought, I started to wipe Adrian’s face as well, which didn’t go over so well because he backed away. Actually, it was more like dashed to the opposite side of the room.

“Adrian, I’m not going to hurt you, you are my brother. All I wanted to do is clean your face off, too!”

“ … No…” His eyes grew black and his little body tensed up.

Then I noticed something about him. His eyes; they probed into my very soul. I felt his pain, anger, and resentment. What had my family done to him that he is nothing more than a shell of a being? I wanted—needed—to help because what I was feeling was not the soul of a child, but in every sense of the word my brother… we were connected.

“Adrian, you are my brother. Can you answer a few questions for me? You can stand right where you are, but I need you to answer as best as you can, alright?”

He nodded, but with trepidation.

“How is it that you are my brother? I’ve never even heard of you.”

He paused and took a deep breath. “I don’t rightly know. I didn’t know I had an older sister until now,” he said softly.

“What was your father’s name?”

Pausing again, he said, “Lazar …”

I should have known he would say that. Maybe he didn’t know or couldn’t remember his biological father, but I had to know.
